Vercel's AI SDK shipped patches for v7, v6 and v5 in the same week. The release notes list only dependency updates, but they still give a basis for timing an upgrade.

ai, the core package of Vercel's AI SDK for building AI apps, has 15,301,209 weekly downloads on npm. This week's release list shows three major versions of it side by side: v7, v6 and v5.

Nearly everything in the release notes is a patch or a dependency update. There is no feature announcement. Even so, knowing which versions still receive fixes helps a team decide when to upgrade.

Three releases of the Vue wrapper package came out side by side, and each one points at a different ai version.

By major version that is v7, v6 and v5. All three received a patch this week.

The provider packages released in the same week point at the same base package, @ai-sdk/provider-utils@5.0.69.

On the workflow side, @ai-sdk/workflow-harness@1.0.165 updates @ai-sdk/harness@1.0.165.

The release notes do not say what these patches fix. They show only which package moved to which version. What follows is therefore read from the numbers, not from the changes.

  • A team whose automation pipeline is tied to AI SDK v5 or v6 has no reason in this week's record to hurry to v7. Both versions are still receiving fixes
  • A team that uses several provider packages should look at its lock file once, because one base package is updated across many providers
  • A team that uses the workflow package should check that it matches ai@7.0.154

Three versions moving at once means the older versions are kept for a long time. It also means there is a baseline to compare against when moving to a newer version.
